European software company eM Client has announced the launch of version 11 of its email and productivity client, describing it as “the most important update” in the application’s history. eM Client 11 is used by millions of users worldwide.

The new version offers an integrated AI assistant that allows users to search, summarize, and organize emails using natural language. New features include personalized writing, context-based quick replies, automatic detection of activities and events, and the creation of email rules through simple instructions.
eM Client 11: why it matters
Thanks to the Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) function, organizations can connect their own compatible AI models and providers using their own access keys, in line with security and data protection requirements. Support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard, allows external AI assistants to access relevant email information and perform operations supported by the application, integrating email into automated workflows.
Developers highlight how eM Client offers a concrete solution to reduce dependence on proprietary ecosystems, in a European context increasingly attentive to digital sovereignty. The application was entirely developed in Europe and supports open standards IMAP, CalDAV, and CardDAV, as well as Microsoft Exchange (via EWS or Microsoft Graph) and Google accounts.
Companies and public administrations can choose their own email infrastructure independently of the client used. Developers state that it is possible to replace Outlook while maintaining Microsoft 365, with the option to subsequently migrate to a sovereign infrastructure without requiring users to make further application changes.
What changes and what are the effects
Emails and personal data are stored and processed locally in eM Client, without the need for additional proprietary cloud infrastructures. Organizations therefore maintain control over their data and its retention. For contracts with public administrations, eM Client can enter into source-code escrow agreements or other forms of code access.
eM Client 11 introduces a new Command Palette, the ability to pin important messages, advanced automations, Matrix chat support, a renewed interface, and other calendar improvements. Version 11 is available for Windows and macOS, with apps also for Android and iOS.
