Instagram Edits for Mac: Desktop version arrives with new features

Instagram Edits. Instagram has released the desktop version of Edits, the free video editing application initially launched in 2025 for Reels creators. Currently, availability is limited to Macs with Apple Silicon chips; Windows and Linux are not yet supported.

Instagram’s stated goal is to capture projects that are too complex to manage on smartphones, where a larger screen, the use of a mouse, and a keyboard can make a difference. The computer version introduces tools that were absent or limited in the mobile version.

Instagram Edits: why it matters

Among the new features is a complete multi-track timeline, keyframes for precise video transition management, audio waveforms for more accurate sound editing, and color grading tools that include wheels and curves for color correction. It is also possible to import custom LUTs (Look-Up Tables) and additional font files.

The app also offers unlimited automatic captions in multiple languages, a music library with royalty-free tracks usable in projects, hundreds of predefined audio and video effects, and the ability to configure custom keyboard shortcuts, including importing them from other editing software. Text and audio styles saved on the mobile app are already available in the desktop version.

At present, it is not possible to edit the same project on both mobile devices and desktop, but Instagram has announced that this feature will be introduced in the future. Content publishing happens directly from the editor to Instagram, with the addition of tags, geographic location information, and native previews (trial reels), without the need to download and transfer files to the phone.

Video export is available in 4K resolution, without a watermark, in both vertical and horizontal formats, consistent with the platform’s recent support for longer content. Brett Westervelt, head of the Edits team, explained that many creators have found it difficult to manage complex projects on smartphones, citing the example of a full timeline and the need for greater precision in editing.

What changes and what are the effects

Matthew Simari, product lead, added that the app integrates an MCP (Machine Learning Processing) for its tools, allowing users to switch between automated and manual editing with the support of agents like Meta’s Muse. The company promises weekly updates while continuing to develop the mobile version used by over 50 million creators.

The main competitor to Edits is ByteDance’s CapCut, available on Windows and Mac since 2021. Other PC tools include Clipchamp (integrated into Windows), Filmora, Canva, VEED, and DaVinci Resolve, as well as vertical solutions like Descript and OpusClip. The arrival of Edits on desktop intensifies competition in the video editing sector, offering the advantage of integrated publishing with Instagram but initially limiting itself to macOS users only.
